He was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford then Exeter College in the same city and ordained in 1910. Beginning his ministry with a curacy at Bromley he was then appointed Chaplain of Magdalen College, Oxford. A period interrupted with World War I service as a Chaplain to the Forces during which he was twice Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the MC. When peace returned he became Rector of Easthampstead, then Rural Dean of Reading〔(Berkshire Rural Deaneries at the National Archive )〕 and finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) Archdeacon of Berkshire.〔(Archdeacons of Berkshire )〕 In retirement he continued to serve the Church as an Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of Oxford. ==Notes==
